Overspending season: candidates breaking the standards

Money, endorsements, funds, breaking the rules.

Candidates vying for a position in the government surely let it all out to stay relevant in this election season as they spend for advertisements, television and radio commercials, and tons of campaign materials just to win the pot of gold. We can’t deny that every election period, there are anomalies and controversial overspending issues that can annihilate our laws and then break it.

In social media, candidates can make their own platforms and pages to help them grab numerous votes. This technique will use their “private funds” just to upgrade their campaign styles. It’ll use their money to represent not just themselves but also their respective parties and ticket mates or running mates. It is unstoppable, unbreakable, and unreachable, the money they’re pitching up and their power bragging the weak standards.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) standards on candidate’s proper spending rule range from P3.00 for every registered voter and P5.00 for every party-list groups and political parties. Imagine their capacity to pay several printing companies, to buy air times in television and radio networks and to create social media campaign pages, they’re dominating the rules without the authority’s permission and without the voters’ attention.

The February 12 campaign for the senatorial and party-lists candidates already pulled the trigger and fired a huge amount of money for their campaign bonanza. Millions or even billions of campaign funds will be used to conquer the television, improper banner, and tarpaulin sizes will rise on the alleys of the cities and the social media will be a home for the campaign season.
