Velvet Buzzsaw is a Netflix Original Film released on January 30 this year. It follows the lives of three huge names in the art industry and how a single accident can turn their lives upside down. As intriguing as the title suggests, Velvet buzzsaw is a new plate at the film industry table.
First, a highly acclaimed art critic Morf Vanderwalt (Jake Gyllenhaal). He is the eyes of the art industy, what he likes is the next huge thing. He is complex, he is a sassy guy with a loose hinge on his jaw, he says what he means but also, he is lonely, he is unsatisfied with his life.
A cold-hearted museum curator, Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo), she is on top of her game, an icy posterior which matches her work ethic, to never accept the word ‘no’. Though through her success, her determination often skews her principle in life and uses unfair leverages against her opponents.
Lastly, the glue that hold this movie together. The ambitious assistant of Haze, Josephine (Zawe Ashton). She dreams to be on tip but her poor luck and her poor performance leaves her at the bottom of the barrel. Until one day.

Josephine came across a death of her neighbor, an old man, Ventril Dease. She stumbled upon hundreds of artworks by Dease and even though the paintings are in strict rule to be burned away, she saw an opportunity and decided to keep them instead. She showed them to her colleague and lover, Morf who finds the pieces ‘brilliant’. So then they decided to loop on Rhodora to sell the paintings and make millions out of one man’s unfortunate death.
They deviced a devious plan to take sole ownership of the paintings and launch them in the art gallery. Morf went on to write a book about the late artist and with that, the maniacal killing spree commenced.
The paintings comes to life, spontaneously combust, taking whoever with it. There were a numerous deaths in the film, none of which will be revealed for the readers who wishes to catch the film.
This film takes the audience for a glimpse of the art industry, a place where not everyone is familiar with. With it, the movie takes a spin on the regular boring details and instead, hooks the audience to wish there were more information revealed.
A lot of symbolism are seen throughout the movie, definitely a must watch for those who crave a new twist on your typical murder spree movie.
