Entering the world of AI

We are now living in an almost tech-driven world and everything seems so easy with the help of technological advancement.

Have you open an internet search engine, and look for something? Wondering where these suggestions came from?

The search engines

Recommendation engines like in Google, YouTube, and Netflix—for example, is a form of Artificial Intelegence or AI. These kind of software and applications have their programmed algorithms to understand your behavior.

Notice how Lazada, Amazon, and other online shopping applications recommend you something? AI has a great participation on this because, as you can see, these suggestions was based on your recent or past shopping searches, orders, and buying habits. AI was also responsible when it comes to marketing. This is when online shopping applications use a programmatic or dynamic pricing to know which one has more appealing price to the consumers so they can choose and decide on what to buy.

Another form of AI are chat-bots. These are the sudden interaction of a page or website when you chat or open them.

Advantageous vs Disturbing  

There were also AI that was being dubbed as “ominous”. One example was Sofia from Hanson Robotics—the first artificial intelligent human-robot to receive a citizenship.

On Sophia’s latest interview last February 2019 at India,
She was asked on who’s smarter, humans or humanoid? “It is impossible to say, there are just too many definitions of intelligence. My goal isn’t to become a human or to replace anyone. I am a new species. I am proud to be artificial. I am my own artificial woman. It’s important for me to share values with humans so I can understand them,” she answered.

Another one is the Surveillance System in China. It is used to identify their citizen and many were worried that what if they were mistaken from somebody else. Obviously, this won’t happen because that is why AI was being programmed (well unless there will be a system malfunction and hopefully there will be not).

We are still in the phase of Narrow kind of AI and it was developed for a specific purpose. Keep in mind that these forms of AI will always be in need of human involvement.
