Captain Marvel rockets to a historic $455 million global debut

Marvel Studio’s first female-led superhero movie makes historic debut earning $153 million domestically and $455 million globally, thus making it the highest grossing film led by a woman.

This character debut and origin story of Carol Danvers has exceed Disney‘s expectations and ranked one of the most successful character debut into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Primarily debuting in the Marvel Comics in 1968, Brie Larson’s character Captain Marvel has been one of the lesser known supers among the others.

“She definitely pushed us higher, further, faster,” said Disney distribution Chief Cathleen Taff on Captain Marvel sitting alongside blockbuster movies such as “The Avengers,” “Black Panther,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Iron Man 3.”

“Captain Marvel” rocketed up other record books, too. It sets a new worldwide mark for a film directed or co-directed by a woman. “Captain Marvel” was helmed by the filmmaking team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who previously made the indies “Half Nelson” and “Mississippi Grind.”

It’s the sixth-largest worldwide debut ever. The only movie with a female lead that’s opened better globally was “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which grossed $529 million when it debuted in 2015.
