Home remedies for dog ticks

By: Revia Mae Sibal

Owning a dog has much more responsibilities than what you really think. Like humans, dogs need to be taken care of too because obviously they can’t take care of themselves.

The most common problem among dogs are ticks. If you don’t want to use harsh chemicals to touch your fur friend, here’s a list of alternative medications that can be easily found in our homes:

  1. Garlic – Aside from using garlic as an ingredient in our food, it can also be used as a dietary supplement to dogs in order to prevent ticks.  The smell is excreted through the skin that can repel ticks and fleas. However, garlic contains sulfoxides and disulfides that can damage their red blood cells and cause anemia.
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar – This adds acidity to the dog’s blood thus serves as a repellant to ticks and fleas.
  3. Citrus – You could cut a lemon, put it in a jar with boiling water, and let it sit overnight. You could use this solution as a repellant spray.

There are lots of ways to protect our dogs from the nonstop scratching. While the methods listed above are effective to some, it does not guarantee that it will work for others too. It’s best to consult your vet to know what should be done with your dog’s problem.
