Kristen Stewart as one of the Angels in the Charlie’s Angels reboot

What a year with all of these reboots!

Dorky dancing, badass martial arts, the power of a hair flip: 18 years ago, Charlie’s Angels gave us some of the best life lessons of the millennium.

And while we will always have a place in our hearts for Lucy, Drew, and Cameron, this year is promising a brand new installment of kick-ass girl power. Buckle up, because the angels are coming back to the big screen.

Sony Pictures (as usual) is rebooting Charlie’s Angels and here is what you need to know about the new movie. The original Charlie’s Angels series ran on ABC from 1976 to 1981, and it was something of a pop culture phenomenon. Produced by TV legend Aaron Spelling, the series starred Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Farrah Fawcett as three women working at a private detective agency under the leadership of their enigmatic unseen boss, Charlie. While critics at the time were mixed on the show’s merits and it developed a reputation for being a weekly excuse for eye candy, audiences loved it. For its first two seasons, Charlie’s Angels was one of the top rated series in the United States.

It is still quite a few months before the latest iteration of Charlie’s Angels unite on the big screen, but we already have a pretty awesome look at the ensemble.

Who’s playing who?

The big-name talent her is Kristen Stewart, but we are also pretty excited to see Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott in action too. It that’s not enough to get you excited, the news that actress/producer/director extraordinaire Elizabeth Banks is helming the bid-screen adaptation surely will. With a world record-breaking debut under the belt for Pitch Perfect, we’d say she’s the perfect woman to bring a girl-powered blockbuster to our screens.

Oh, and she will also star as Bosley, the detective agency owner and enigmatic communication between the angels and Charlie.

Stewart has by and large avoided big-budget Hollywood projects of this caliber since stepping away from the world of sparkly vampires. Charlie’s Angels signals a shift back into the mainstream for Stewart in 2019, as well as the upcoming action-thriller, Underwater.

Naomi Scott is a breakout talent in the rise. The 25 year-old English actress played Kimberly Hart/Pink Ranger in last year’s “Power Rangers” reboot, which also starred Banks. Rounding out the group is English actress Ella Balinska. “Charlie’s Angels” will be Balinska’s biggest project to date after appearing on British television series such as “Midsome Murders,” “Casuality,” and “Nyela’s Dream.” The actress played the lead in the 2016 U.K. movie “Hunted.”

This remake will also include Sam Claflin, Noah Centineo, and Nat Faxon. Banks directing Charlie’s Angels is still a major deal in terms of female representation in top directorial positions. A study from the Center of the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University revealed that only 8% of the top 250 highest grossing films of 2018 were directed by women, down 4% from the previous year. Given a potentially lucrative property like this to a female director is not something that happens very often in Hollywood and represents a positive step forward.

With this much of a women empowerment, are you ready to welcome this new batch of badass women in the Philippine cinemas this year? Anticipate this for it will be available this October!
