Make it a better place

Arem Bolalin

“Cleanliness and order are not matters of instinct; they are matters of education, and like most great things, you must cultivate a taste for them.”

Polytechnic University of the Philippines has been known for year for giving quality education to the scholars of nation, and there’s nothing to argue with that. However, if we are going to look on the physical aspects of the school, it is undeniable that the facilities are not good enough.

Most of the time, the comfort rooms are dirty and the smell is so uninviting. The doors don’t have a lock, or worse, some cubicle doesn’t even have a door. The floor is sometimes muddy. I even had my personal experience when I really need to pee but there’s no available neat cubicle. And to my surprise, there’s also no supply of water that time. Can you imagine that?

Classroom is another thing. Sometimes, the electric fans are not functioning well, or if so, it is covered with thick layer of dust so it’s still kind of same thing. The armchairs are rusty that it can sometimes stain our pants or shirts.

Let’s not fake it; it is really evident that some of the amenities are not satisfying. Some might say that asking for improvement on the facilities is being demanding, but I don’t think it is. Providing hygienic atmosphere for the students is not too much. It is not just us who will benefit from that, but even the faculty members and everyone who’s part of the community.

For the students, cleanliness must also come from us. Have the initiative in making our surroundings neat. We are people, not pigs. We can do so much more, we can do better.
