Mental Health Awareness 101: Depression

Franz Lewin Embudo

Depression is defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary as a state of feeling sad. It’s a serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way.
While according to Medical definition, depression is an illness that involves the body, mood, thoughts, that affects the way a person eats, sleeps, feels about himself or herself and thinks about things. It’s not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness on a condition that can be wished away.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 350 million people cases all over the world suffer from depression. It’s a leading cause of disability. Based on the study, women are more likely to be diagnosed with depression than men.
In countries like the Philippines where mental health is rarely discussed, it usually needs first to have a high profile case before the government takes an action and people begin talking about depression.
The outcome of an International studyadministered by WHO clearly showed that the prevalence rate of depression worldwide ranged from 2.6% to 29.5%. In a survey conducted by Perlas, Tronco et al in the Philippines, around 5.3% of the subjects were suffering from this condition.
People who usually feel yhis way are difficult to engage with. We misunderstood these people sometimes because they act like in a different behaviour. It involves a loss of interest in things that used to bring pleasure.
Being sad is normal but being depressed is another story. Sadness and grief are normal human emotions. From time to time, we experience this kind of feelings but they go away within a few days or a week. We could choose what emotions we wanted to feel. When we choose to ignore negativity, we also free ourselves suffering from depression. Set your mind to a peaceful and positive thinking. Depression is just only our option.
