Netflix cancels One Day at a Time and everyone is mad

Despite great response from critics, Netflix decides to cancel family sitcom One Day at a Time after 3 seasons.

On a twitter post, Netflix reveals the sad news and explains that the show’s lack of viewers played a major role in the cancellation. After that, show’s creator Mike Royce sparked up hope tweeting the show was already exploring potential platforms to host future seasons.

Like many great shows shelfed by entertainment corporations, the news was met by disappointed angry fans on twitter, especially its Latinx audiences whose lives are rarely represented on TV shows or movies.

Latino celebrities including Stephane Beatriz, Lin- Manuel Miranda, and Melissa Fumero practically begged on twitter for a network to pick up the show referring to the heroic and dramatic pick up NBC did to Brooklyn 99, a show they all starred in.

One day at a Time followed the story of Penelope (Justine Machado), a Cuban single mother of two children, Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz). She receives help from her mother Lydia (Rita Moreno) and her upstairs neighbor Schneider (Todd Grinnel). Aside from Latinx representation, the show never showed weakness in discussing sensitive topics such as homosexuality, racism, illegal immigration, drugs or poverty.

Netflix seems to be killing numerous shows and it’s hard to say whether it’s a scheme to pave way to new material. However, the streaming network is releasing more and more shows than ever before.
