Since the global idol group, Big Bang’s comeback in 2017, the Korean wave legendary group has been under fire because of endless scandals that shook their fandom to its very core.
After T.O.P’s drug scandal in 2018, Daesung’s hit and run allegations, and G-Dragon’s military special treatment speculations, all of these was topped off with the youngest member, Seungri’s scandal, which is the biggest scandal ever not just in the group but in all of the K-Pop industry.
With the rest of the idol group serving their days in the mandatory Korean enlistment, Seungri stirred the whole K-pop world by retiring completely from the entertainment industry this week.
Receiving allegations of illegal acts such as prostitution and the use of illegal drugs done within the confines of the club he directs, the Burning Sun, he was prompted to leave the industry, severing all ties from his company, YG entertainment, as he announced this on his social media accounts.
Many celebrities were then prompted to quit as the K-pop sex scandal including actor Jung Joon Young, FT Island’s Choi Jong Hoon and CNBLUE’s Lee Jong Hyun.
Some fans were naturally disappointed by this occurrence as the rest of group cannot defend them or even lessen the damage to the name of the band because they are currently serving in the military.
One can only wonder what kind of fate Big Bang is facing after all the trouble they conjured up through their whole career since debut in 2006.
Even if this is the biggest scandal that rocked the foundations of the K-wave phenomenon, it is not insusceptible from the rescue scheme that saved a handful of idols that were once damaged by scandals in the past. They will most probably lay low for a few years, appear on a variety show and apologize for all the mistakes they have done in the past- a real wake-up call to re-evaluate our tolerance to celebrities and well-known individuals defying the laws and morals of our society.
