Get ready, folks! The New Mutants is an upcoming American horror film in the superhero genre, based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name and distributed by 20th Century Fox. This film was initially conceived as the first in a trilogy of mutant horror films, and is intended to be the 13th installment in the X-Men film series.
The X-Men franchise is a strange beast to kee up with. The timeline is (honestly) muddled, there’s a variety of offshoots that include everything from Wolverine to Deadpool, and the quality of the movies is all over the map.
For every classic original X-Men trilogy made, there’s the new generation that kind of looks like as a prequel or a sequel from the classic ones. That what makes one of the upcoming X-Men titles, The New mutants, so interesting. For the first time in the franchise, this isn’t your typical superhero film. New Mutants is diving deep into horror territory as it adapts a truly scare line of comics.
After numerous delays, it seems that The New Mutants will finally be released after X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Styled in some places (although not officially) as X-Men: The New Mutants, the film will be based on the longstanding spin-off comic dealing with Professor X’s younger class of superhumans. So step aside, Cyclops. Jog on, Jean Grey. There’s a new set of mutants on the block.
Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.
As a result, fans would love to know who’s playing who to make the comic book version come to life.
Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing as Illyana Rasputin aka Magik. She’s a Russian mutant with sorcery powers, who “uses teleportation discs to travel.” She is the sister of Colossus, a member of the X-Men seen in the previous films in the series.
Maisie Williams will be Rahna Sinclair aka Wolfsbane. Funny how she plays Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, where her character has a pet called Nymeria that is a direwolf in the series. While in this upcoming movie, she’s named Wolfsbane. Without further ado, her character is a Scottish mutant “struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf.” Now, that’s pretty interesting to see ain’t it?
Charlie Heaton will be as Sam Guthrie aka Cannonball. A Kentuckian mutant “who can propel himself into the air and is invulnerable while doing so.”
Henry Zaga will be as Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot. A Brazillian mutant “with the ability to manipulate solar energy.” Now that’s pretty powerful.
Blu Hunt will be playing Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage. A Native American mutant “who has the power to create illusions drawn from the fears and desires of a person’s mind.”
Alice Braga will be as Cecilia Reyes. She’s a mentor to the group, and a medical doctor “who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself.” That’s really cool!
Now that you’ve known something more about this upcoming X-Men installment, this is going to be available in the Philippine cinemas this late July until August!
